| A warning from 3 years ago before all the plans were made,By a Danish
urban planner Jan Gehl, who was visiting Sydney, said a lack of nearby
residents, a parkland too large for its own good and a location too
difficult to reach, would make the area, known as Barangaroo, dangerous
and deserted warning it will become "fearsome at night" and a
"wasteland" on weekends and public holidays.I've called it 'docklands'
at one end and 'wastelands' at the other end," Professor Gehl said,
referring to the "awful office tower area" at London's redeveloped
Docklands. "I don't believe it will be a success. It's against all we
know about recreational patterns in the 21st century.the area risked
becoming too unsafe to wander through, said Professor Gehl, whose has
worked on harbourside regeneration projects in Norway and Denmark. You
can just about distinguish activities and movements 100 metres away.
[In] most of that new Barangaroo, there are more than 100 metres between
the road and the water's edge, so … I fear that it would be very
fearsome at night. "The old patterns where people, come Sunday, were
fleeing the overcrowded city to get out in the parks and nature, has
changed into a new pattern where, come Sunday, people flee the
under-populated suburbs to seek out places where other people are.Theft;
Alcohol-fuelled violence; Other violent crime; Public transport after
dark will be a major problem,Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority and
police have already got their hands full , High rents, parking meters
and Sydney Harbour foreshore Authority rules will make the place a Ghost
Town.
