Barangaroo public inquiry needed

Premier Keneally’s curious endorsement of her own expensive survey (p14 SMH 23-24 October) on the views of 2200 hundred Sydneysiders towards the Barangaroo redevelopment betrays her desperation to ram this project through while public understanding remains low.

Of these handpicked respondents, a worrying 82% “knew little or nothing about the $6 million project", even though it is the biggest ever single development in the CBD.

This issue is not just about one development. It is about our democracy being either in the hands of a well informed majority, or just an elite few in politics and business doing deals behind closed doors. It is about achieving development that is creative, sustainable and above all, in the public interest.

With this government resisting all calls for more information and transparency, a full public inquiry will be the only way taxpayers can accurately determine if the myriad of murky financial and political deals behind this mega-project are in the public interest.
