The $6 billion Barangaroo project will be subject to a "short, sharp review" ordered by the NSW government in a breakthrough announced by the minister for planning, Brad Hazzard.

A group opposing the development, Australians for Sustainable Development were due to challenge the validity of the planning process in court on Monday.

But following a mediation session today between the group and the developer Lend Lease ordered by Mr Hazzard, the groups have agreed to postpone the court case.

Mr Hazzard said he would appoint an independent chairman to conduct the review, which he expected would take around two months.

He described the decision as "a victory for common sense".
