The developer of Barangaroo is wrong in asserting that there is huge support for its plans (''Public delighted by Barangaroo: Lend Lease'', September 27). The project as it has been presented to the Department of Planning has been reduced in bulk once, but still remains as obscene as Blues Point Tower (the world's ugliest building) to the north of Barangaroo on McMahons Point. Foreshore development should be subtle and sensitive to its immediate surrounds. It should be low-rise, and height limits should be increased only proportionate to distance from the shore. Tall development at the shoreline is analogous to a person pushing their way to the front of the audience at a show and standing up so none behind can see. Plans for the Barangaroo development, as they stand, will result in a Gold Coast-style disaster. As for building into the harbour, talk to anyone in Hong Kong about what that sort of building has done to Victoria Harbour and one will gain a clear picture of the distress people there feel about the destruction of their harbour. |
