Go for brilliance, not just more boring boxes |

Barangaroo deserves something spectacular - nothing less (''A clash of views as the city fights Lend Lease's vision for Barangaroo'', October 23-24). Modern business districts need skyscrapers, but for Barangaroo surely we need one standout building as a counterpoint to the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. The six computer-generated pictures of the proposed development were great for visualising the various versions and show a nauseating predominance of vertical and horizontal rectangular boxes. What's new? Where is the spectacular building jutting out on the shoreline along the lines of the Guggenheim in Bilbao, of the Gherkin in London, of the planned UTS Broadway building? Barangaroo deserves something spectacular, something brilliant - nothing less. |
