Friends of Barangaroo campaigner and City of Sydney Deputy Lord Mayor Marcelle Hoff has urged people of the Inner West to sign a petition for a stop to over-development of the harbour’s foreshore.

Cr Hoff said the Hands Off Our Harbour petition gathered more than 7000 signatures in just over two weeks.

The group is hoping Premier Barry O’Farrell will make good on his promise to debate any issue in parliament that has 10,000 signatures.

The petitioners are pushing for the new government to appoint a Special Commission of Inquiry into Barangaroo.

“We are not surprised by the amount of signatures, as there is so much community angst about this,” Cr Hoff said.

“What is surprising is how few people know about the issues. When it becomes obvious what’s happening they become enraged.” On April 4 Mr O’Farrell scrapped the Part 3A planning legislation, which allowed the former Labor government to bypass planning laws to approve the development.

Balmain State Greens MP Jamie Parker said Mr O’Farrell should “act on Barangaroo now.”
