Plonking a lot of nondescript towers along the waterfront does not a financial centre make. The really interesting cities in the world grow organically, piecemeal and incrementally, and the history of large developments such as Canary Wharf in London or Docklands in Melbourne is very sad.

Carving Barangaroo into smaller lots and allowing different architects to respond would have been far more likely to deliver a interesting space. Like everything this rotten government touches, Barangaroo promises to be all surface fizz but ultimately a lost opportunity to do something special.
