Surely the people deserve something more from the development at Barangaroo than office towers, a hotel and an existing concrete wharf area for use by cruise liners and their multimillionaire passengers. The proposed headland park to replace the concrete will give some of the foreshore back to the people. In any case, the Sydney cruise liner organisation stated recently that within a decade or so new bigger cruise liners would not pass under the Harbour Bridge. As a member of the citizens' committee, Defenders of Sydney Harbour Foreshores, which fought successfully in the 1990s to save the former harbour foreshore defence sites, I believe we should take every opportunity to regain the foreshores for the public. The former prime minister Paul Keating might have been intemperate in his remarks about lord mayor Clover Moore, but that is no reason for the public to lose the plan for a superb headland park at Barangaroo, west of the city, which will match and balance Mrs Macquaries Point to the east.
